AROUND THE BLOCK
TURTLE CREEK: Posh abodes in the sky overlook a verdant pocket of the city.
Wedged between Oak Lawn and Uptown, this tony narrow parcel is named for Turtle Creek, the spring-fed stream it runs alongside. Its deluxe residential high-rises, which started going up in the fifties and sixties, have been home to an A-list assortment of Hollywood stars, art-world luminaries, and civic leaders.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Leafy surroundings, bird’s-eye views of the Dallas skyline, and comparisons to the Upper East Side.
Turtle Creek residents savor penthouse-style amenities like private elevators and access to a 24-hour doorman, not to mention unmatched views of both the Dallas skyline and the swath of mature trees along the waterway below. The elegant restaurant and bar at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, Dallas’s premier luxury hotel, serve as the neighborhood’s de facto social club.
THE LIFESTYLE: Leisurely, quiet, and low-maintenance.
Without the nightlife that enlivens neighboring Uptown, Turtle Creek is more sanctuary than scene. And though there are single-family homes and gated communities, its many elegant apartment buildings appeal to those who don’t want the fuss of a big yard or palatial estate (and who don’t mind HOA dues). Neighbors gather for regular creek cleanups to keep their Edenic community pristine.
UNEXPECTED APPEAL: The enduring mark of notable architects.
It was landscape architect George Kessler who encouraged civic leaders to highlight Turtle Creek’s natural splendor and dreamed up the neighborhood’s two-mile parkway. The Kalita Humphreys Theater, which opened in 1959, is one of three surviving theaters designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
THE MARKET: Posh penthouses in elegant high-rises provide unparalleled city views.
While there are gated communities with single-family homes, Turtle Creek is known for its assortment of sky-high luxury condos and apartments.
YOU’LL FALL IN LOVE WITH: Feeling tucked away in a lush urban utopia.
Turtle Creek has an astonishing 87 acres of greenbelts and parkland as well as access to the still-expanding Katy Trail. And yet, the city’s sleek urban jungle of museums, theaters, entertainment venues, and office buildings is less than two miles away.
